Character Profile Hornet - Ink

Plug: read Bulletproof here.

I'm going to use this for another one of these Marvel-style character profiles that I post on Drunkduck to bridge the gap between issues. But mostly, it's an inking experiment.

Since the switch to b/w, I've been doing progressively more and more hatching for obvious reasons, and so far I've always done it with an array of Rothring tech pens. They give you a lot of control for the finer details, but there's a stiff quality particularly to the hatches that comes from the uniform line weight, and I've always preferred the more fluid look of quills. And now I've finally worked up the nerve to try my hand at them.

I used a Hunt 512 for most everything here that I would usually do with a tech pen. Pretty pleased with the result for a first attempt, though it's a bit messy and I made a lot of mistakes. I think I'm getting the hang of it, though, and it's really fun. The more dynamic feel is certainly there, I just need to control the line weights better - some of the hatching lines are much thicker than others for no good reason, and there are other problems.

Anyway, I have one or two more of these coming up plus two covers, so I'll get plenty of practice until the next issue starts - I'm definitely going to be using this thing from now on.

Colors soon - this will also be the first time I draw Hornet properly in color, as ridiculous as that seems.

Pentel 3H mechanical pencil, Kolinsky sable brush, Hunt 512, various Rothring Rapidographs.
