Description

~SeanE posted a link to this piece [link] by ~keucha on his profile, asking for someone to ink it. Like an idiot, I decided to give it a shot and announce my intention to do so in his comments.

Now I know it's bad form to blame your gear when you do a mediocre job, but I really do think I could've done better if I had a color printer. Instead, I laser printed the pencils in grey (too dark, too, but I had a lighter printout and that was impossible to work with because of the shitty resolution) on two A4 sheets, taped them together, went to work on it for upwards of six hours and hoped for the best, thinking the contrast might be enough so I could somehow get rid of the grey with the levels tool.

And now I've been fiddling with the damn thing for two hours, trying all manner of different settings and working it over with the dodge/burn tool, and honestly, this is the best I can come up with. And since I've invested so much time in it, I also don't want to trash it, so... here it is.

The good news is that while I didn't get the end result I was hoping for, what I really wanted to get out of this was to learn something. Keu Cha is obviously someone who basically draws the way I wish I could, and I hoped scrutinizing this piece with a brush in hand (95% of this is brush, I only did the faces with a tech pen) would help me understand his use of hatching and how he creates all these various textures a bit better, and I think that actually worked. As in, I learned a lot from this, and it forced me way out of my comfort zone as far as the inking goes.

So, you know, I don't feel like this was a waste of time, but you'll just have to take my word for it when I say what I have on paper looks much better. *cough*

Still, though, let me know what you think, and in the spirit of ~SeanE's journal (I think), I uploaded this hi-res in case someone wants to color it. Just credit me, and more importantly, Keu Cha, properly if you do.

What size you using for brush. A finer line really doesnt come from a smaller brush but how much ink you load of it. I use a #2 winsor newton for almost all my work thin and thick lines.
